John Thomson: Chinese Women, 1869-72.

John Thomson (1837-1921) was a pioneering Scottish photographer who, after traveling through various parts of Asia, settled in Hong Kong in 1868 and operated a studio there for the next four years. Using Hong Kong as his base, he traveled extensively throughout China and was the first known photographer to document the people and landscapes of China for publication in the western market. Returning to England, he published a four volume book entitled “Illustrations of China and its People” in London, 1873-1874.

You are not a horrible person.
You are not insane or crazy or stupid.
You are not ugly. You are not disgusting. You are not trash.
You are not what he did, or what they said, or how she felt.
You are not a number on a scale.
You are not weak when you are vulnerable.
You are not a grade inked on a sheet of paper.

You are not a coward because you have fears. We all have fears.
You are not a lost cause just because you are still searching.
You are not foolish because you care so deeply about things most people don’t take the time to notice.
You are not unworthy because of your past or the mistakes you made.
You are not doomed to misery no matter what your doubts scream in your ears.
You are not hopeless just because you fall and fail.
You are not insignificant. You are not invisible. You are not inadequate even though you don’t measure to the world’s standards of success.

Northern Lamp Shell (Terebratulina septentrionalis)

…is a species of brachiopod native to the cold waters of the Northern Atlantic. Brachiopods while they may look like bivalves are actually a phylum of unique animals that date back to the Cambrian period.

Like bivalves they are filter feeders but use a lophophore to take in food, instead of a siphon. Northern lamp shells range in color from yellow to grey to reddish brown and are often found attached to rocks, algae and tube worms.

From an early age, Liangy learned martial arts, horseback riding, and archery. At the age of 20, she married a local Sichuan commander named Ma Qiancheng. Together they maintained the peace in an area rife with warlords and insurrections.

Qiancheng died in 1613 and Liangyu took over his position. In 1620, the Nvzhen ethnic minority declared independence from the Ming Dynasty. Liangy led an army to defeat them, selling her own belonging to fund the campaign. Ten years later the Manchu threatened Beijing. Liangy once again led an army supported by her own funds and defeated the insurgents. The Chongzhen Emperor commemorated her victory with commissioned poetry.

The Ming Dynasty fell in 1644. Amid the turmoil, Liangy’s lands remained relative calm and agriculturally productive. She is believed to have helped 100,000 refugees find homes in Shizhu.

An active leader until her death at age 75, Liangy was named Grand Protector of the Crowned Prince by the Southern Ming Emperor She remains one of the highest ranking female warriors in Chinese history.

Qin Liangyu is not the real Mulan. Mulan is fictional character who predates Liangyu by several hundred years.
